To be recognized as a certified family law specialist in California, a lawyer must prove to the state bar that he or she has participated in the requisite number of contested and uncontested matters. In addition, he or she must complete the required number of family law courses and pass a stringent specialty bar examination. Before certification is granted, a candidate for certification must have his or her proficiency in the specialty area verified through independent inquiry and peer review.
Certified family law specialists must maintain at least 50 percent of their practice in family law. In addition, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements to retain their designation as certified family law specialists.
